Cerebrovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Options

Cerebrovascular disease is a group of disorders affecting the blood vessels in the brain. In addition to stroke, these include transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations.

The stroke centers of Atlantic Health System Neuroscience can rapidly assess and treat patients with any of these cerebrovascular conditions.

If an artery is blocked, we may use thrombolytic therapy, in which “clot busting” drugs are used to break up or dissolve blood clots. This can be effective if administered within four and a half hours after symptoms begin.

When patients have internal bleeding of the brain due to an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation, we can perform endovascular procedures. In these procedures, a thin tube is inserted to the arm or groin to resolve the issue without the need to perform a craniotomy or opening of the skull. This results in less discomfort and blood loss and shorter hospital stays for the patient.
