Mohamad Cherry, MD, MS
Program Director

Mohamad Cherry is the medical director of Hematology for Atlantic Health System, and the fellowship director for the Hematology-Oncology fellowship program at Morristown Medical Center. He joined Atlantic Hematology Oncology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center's Stephenson Cancer Center, bringing years of clinical knowledge and expertise. With specialty training from some of the nation's most skilled clinicians, Dr. Cherry attained some of his clinical training at the leukemia department at MD Anderson and completed his fellowship in hematology/oncology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center's Stephenson Cancer Center. He performed two residencies - an internal medicine residency at Staten Island University Hospital and a laboratory medicine residency at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon. Previously, Dr. Cherry attained his medical degree at Lebanese University. He also earned a Master of Science degree in clinical and translational research from University of Oklahoma College of Public Health. Prior to joining the Atlantic Health System, Dr. Cherry served as the Hematology-Oncology fellowship program director and was the co-chair of the Academy of Teaching Scholars Faculty Development, Education and Mentoring Committee at the University of Oklahoma. Other administrative roles include co-chair of the leukemia working group at the Sarah Cannon Research Institute Blood Cancer Consortium. As a principal investigator of multiple clinical trials, Dr. Cherry has performed groundbreaking research in niche areas that include epigenetics and development of new therapeutics in relapsed and refractory blood cancers. He has developed teaching materials and chapters in medical texts and has lectured both nationally and internationally. Dr. Cherry continues to serve as a mentor and an advisor to fellows, residents and medical students. He contributes to continuing education, public health, and professional development, and has won awards and funding for both his research and his clinical pursuits.

Michael Scola, MD
Associate Program Director

Dr. Michael Scola is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hematologist oncologist practicing at Atlantic Hematology Oncology located at Morristown Medical Center. For the past 20 years, Dr. Scola has maintained a broad-based clinical practice, with a focus on benign and malignant hematology. He is currently director of the new Atlantic Thrombosis Center, designed to investigate and manage patients with a variety of bleeding and clotting disorders. Dr. Scola is a skilled and compassionate physician. His postdoctoral training includes a fellowship in hematology oncology from Boston University Medical Center, where he received the Outstanding Fellow award and the Chiefs’ Hematology Award for clinical excellence. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. A teacher and mentor, Dr. Scola served many years as course director of pathophysiology at Northeastern University, Boston, and is actively involved in instructing residents at Morristown Medical Center. He is also involved in clinical research; has worked within the industry as a consultant, lecturer and advisor; and has authored articles and book chapters. Dr. Scola’s education includes a year spent abroad in Florence, Italy, and an intensive post-training program in clinical research at the Harvard School of Public Health. He serves on the boards of the Cancer Hope Network, and the Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey. Dr. Scola is a member of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
