Prerequisites

Successful completion of all third-year clerkships, including a core family medicine rotation.

Description:

Students with a demonstrated interest in family medicine will have the opportunity to work at an advanced level in an ambulatory care setting under the direct supervision of family medicine residents and faculty.  Encounters may include preventative well-visits for adults, infants, and children; emergent and urgent care visits; gynecological visits; pre- and post-natal care visits; management of chronic disease and outpatient procedures.  Students will be exposed to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.  This elective provides learning through clinical experiences and teaching conferences.

Learning Experience:

Students will:

  • Work directly with family medicine residents, faculty, and nurse practitioners, seeing patients of all ages
  • Participate in the medical care of a diverse patient population with a variety of medical issues and will complete comprehensive histories and physical examinations
  • Formulate assessments, differential diagnoses, and treatment plans for patients seen in the office
  • Attend core curriculum lectures with residents
  • Be afforded opportunities to follow their patients in inpatient settings

Goals & Objectives:

  • To gain an understanding of family medicine by applying principles of family medicine in the outpatient, ambulatory care setting
  • To develop differential diagnoses, definitive care plans, and to develop outpatient care skills
  • To refine taking histories and performing physical examinations
  • To enhance assessment and management skills
  • To observe how the practice of family medicine is integrated into the spectrum of care delivered within a multi-specialty institution
  • To learn the appropriate screening for different populations as well as other tenets of preventative medicine
  • To learn the role of the family physician within the community
  • To evaluate family medicine as a possible career choice

Feedback & Evaluation

Feedback and evaluation will be done by attending preceptors and residents. Students will also evaluate their preceptors and residents, and the elective.
