High-Risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy results when some condition puts the mother or the developing fetus, or both, at an increased risk for complications during or after pregnancy and birth.

Some women require a single consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist before or during a high-risk pregnancy to help them prepare and to provide guidance to their doctor. Other women with a high-risk pregnancy may need ongoing care, such as monitoring their condition through co-management with their obstetrician, or performing fetal assessments with ultrasound and/or invasive procedures. Following delivery, maternal-fetal medicine specialists may be consulted to diagnose or manage adverse or unusual events related to high-risk pregnancies.

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists also specialize in the care of fetuses with illnesses and birth defects. They are trained in diagnostic ultrasound and can play an important role in screening for fetal chromosome abnormalities and birth defects. Certain birth defects require multidisciplinary care, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists often coordinate this in preparation for delivery.

If you or your baby needs this special care related to a high-risk pregnancy, Atlantic Maternal-Fetal Medicine is here to help. We provide consultations and diagnostic services at our offices in Morristown and Summit, NJ. Our specialists are on staff at Morristown Medical Center, a Level III Regional Perinatal Center, and Overlook Medical Center, a Level III Intensive Perinatal Center. All beds are equipped with the most sophisticated technology available, including individual fetal monitors with a central monitoring station.

Both hospitals also have Neonatal Intensive Care Units to provide advanced care to our smallest patients. Our maternal fetal medicine physician services are provided in collaboration with a specialized Atlantic Medical Group practice.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes, which is a rise in blood sugar levels that occurs only during pregnancy, has serious health risks for mother and baby when uncontrolled. The key to limiting the potential effects of gestational diabetes is tight blood sugar control. That’s why maternal-fetal medicine specialists help patients adjust their diet and learn to check blood sugar regularly.  Read more about gestational diabetes >
