Traditionally, education in the Overlook Medical Center Internal Medicine program emphasizes evidence-based medicine, the humanistic approach in patient management, critical thinking on diagnostic processes and offers well-organized education curriculum for board preparation. In addition, I have been able to take advantage of the solid mentorship system (faculty-resident) on in-depth career advice, scholarly activities, and resident's well-being. Currently, I'm participating in one of the many team-based QI (Quality-Improvement) and research projects with strong faculty guidance and robust database. As work hours at Overlook are well balanced with personal life, I have been able to spend enough quality time with my 6 years old twin children. Additionally, my family is enjoying living in a well-maintained subsidized housing (3 min walking distance to hospital) in this beautiful town, Summit, NJ.

I chose Overlook Medical center because since the day of my interview, the staff were very welcoming and helpful! Overlook Medical Center truly feels like a community of healthcare providers who have the patient’s best interest at heart. There is an amazing training environment and great learning opportunities from the other residents and attendings. The faculty is very approachable and always willing to help when needed. This program consists of diverse cultures and backgrounds of the residents and faculty group of physicians, bringing various perspectives to the table on not only medical issues but also on social, and cultural topics. Lastly, I also like that New Jersey is not too far away from where my loved ones are and matching here along with many of my classmates was an added bonus!

As someone who grew up in a close-knit community, I feel very fortunate to have been able to find a program with that same sense of community. Overlook provides an opportunity for residents to learn and grow in a nurturing and positive work environment. The attending physicians are not only excellent educators, but also mentors for those seeking careers in primary care, hospitalist medicine, and in acute care settings. The residency program also actively encourages academic pursuits such as participating in research, attending medical conferences, and teaching medical students. I couldn't be happier to have chosen a program that truly cares about the residents. I can sincerely say I look forward to coming to work every day, and a great perk is being able to easily take the train to New York on my days off.

From an academic standpoint I was looking for strong mentorship from attendings, research opportunities to strengthen my resume, dedicated time for resident education and safety of hospital funding and accreditation. Coming up with treatment plans and discussing them with attendings is my favorite part of the day. Opportunities to think and apply what we learn daily, has helped me grow as a resident and gain confidence. There is constant feedback from senior residents and attendings that I’ve been using to build on my strengths and work on my weaknesses. Personally, I am happy that schedule lets me spend time with my family and friends, as well as staying engaged in my hobbies like cycling and tennis. Spending time with co-residents and chatting over some drinks in the Summit area is always a treat, sharing each other's experiences is making all of us stronger!

I chose Overlook for many reasons. I grew up in the area so not only was it nice being close to family, but I knew the type of reputation it had being a very well recognized hospital throughout the state. Another reason I love Overlook is because of the wide array of patient population we see. As residents, we see not only an underserved population from the surrounding towns, but when we rotate on the Atlantic Medical Group hospitalist teams, we are also exposed to a different socioeconomic group; so it is nice seeing the diversity of cases. Another great aspect about this program and hospital is the ancillary staff; they are wonderful!! This takes a large burden off residents. Lastly, the culture of this program is very positive. It is a smaller program and with that comes a very tight knit group.
