Sharen Anghel, MD, SFHM
Chairwoman, Department of Medicine
Dr. Anghel is the Chairwoman of Medicine at Overlook Medical Center. She completed her internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 before joining the faculty in the Internal Medicine Residency at Overlook. Her roles prior to assuming the Chair of Medicine in 2018 included Medical Student Clerkship Director, followed by leader of the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Curriculum, and ultimately the Medical Director of our Atlantic Medical Group Hospital Medicine Group. She is a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine and is actively involved in that society with professional interests including mentorship, quality and patient safety, and program development. She attends on the inpatient teaching service 12 weeks/year. Her outside interests include reading, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency ProgramDr. Williams is the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. She received her medical degree from Howard University in Washington, DC and completed a combined internal medicine/pediatrics residency including a chief residency year at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Williams teaches Quality Improvement and actively mentors residents and faculty in the longitudinal Quality Improvement curriculum at Overlook Medical Center. Her professional interests include Transitions of Care, Quality Improvement and Cultural Competency. Dr. Williams is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. She has served as the lead faculty mentor for the Committee of Interns and Resident (CIR) Pilot Quality Improvement Clinic and helped develop the online Quality Improvement Training Modules for that organization’s Policy Education Initiative. Outside of work she enjoys travelling with her family and participates in medical mission trips to Haiti.

Dr. Jordanovski graduated from the University Ss. Cyril and Methodius School of Medicine in Skopje, Macedonia. He was a resident and then chief resident in the Overlook Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency (2014-2018) before joining the AMG hospitalist group. He has been a core faculty of the program since 2019, focusing on teaching on the inpatient medicine service with expertise in medication assisted treatment for substance abuse disorders. He leads the Directly Observed Exercises for interns providing feedback to them on their ability to complete a hypothesis driven history and physical examination. Dr. Jordanovski directs our patient safety curriculum teaching residents how to report an adverse event and how to complete a root cause analysis. He serves on many of our hospital committees including the Rapid Response and the COPD Committees. His outside interests include travel, food and spending time with family.

Dr. Benvenuti graduated from New York University School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency training at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Syracuse, NY. Prior to joining Overlook Medical Center in 1993, she worked at the Harvard Community Health Plan, the Hitchcock Clinic, and the Muhlenberg Hospital. Dr. Benvenuti currently serves as a preceptor for the residents at the Atlantic Medical Group Internal Medicine Residency Practice at Union where her primary academic interest is outpatient/preventive medicine. Dr. Benvenuti has received several teaching awards. She loves reading, traveling and doing cross-stitch.

Dr. Bulan serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Primary Care and Population Health at Atlantic Medical Group while also contributing as a faculty member for the Internal Medicine Residency program at Overlook Medical Center in New Jersey. With a dedicated focus on operational optimization, patient access, and workflow efficiency within the medical group, she plays a pivotal role in steering primary care initiatives and ensuring excellence in quality measures. Committed to enhancing primary care services, Dr. Bulan actively works towards elevating patient care for the communities served by AMG with an emphasis on quality, patient experience, and population health initiatives. Dr. Bulan earned her medical degree from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and completed her residency and chief residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. With two decades of experience in general Internal Medicine, she has contributed to graduate medical education as well as the delivery of primary care in both the independent practice and multispecialty group settings in New Jersey.

Medical Director, Atlantic Medical Group Internal Medicine Residency PracticeDr Califano graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rome “La Sapienza," and completed an internal medicine residency program and chief residency at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. She stayed on as a full-time faculty member in the internal medicine department from 2004 to 2014 where she won the Teacher of the Year awards in 2005 and 2014. Dr. Califano joined Overlook Medical Center in August 2014 as the Medical Director of Ambulatory Medicine. She has expanded the educational experiences for the ambulatory block rotation and developed a process to improve direct observation and evaluation of residents in the ambulatory setting. Dr. Califano leads the effort and maintains our robust faculty advisor/mentoring program. She also teaches residents on the inpatient service and the perioperative services. Dr. Califano is a member of the ACP and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. During her free time, she enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time with her family and dog.

Medical Student Clerkship DirectorDr. Chan graduated from UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Temple University. She previously worked as a hospitalist before joining the Overlook Medicine Faculty in 2016. She serves as the Medical Student Clerkship Director and oversees the clinical education of all our rotating 3rd year and 4th year medical students from St. Georges University School of Medicine, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Chan coordinates resident and faculty teaching of students within the department and assume responsibility for evaluation of student performance. Her academic interests include resident and student education, women’s health, palliative medicine and hospital medicine. When she is not working, she enjoys cooking, travel, arts, and reality television.

Director of Geriatric EducationDr. Gundavarapu graduated from NTR University of Health Sciences in India, completed her internal medicine residency at Harlem Hospital Center, and her fellowship in Geriatrics at Montefiore Medical Center. She is also board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Gundavarapu served as the Associate Program Director and Chief of Geriatrics at the Jacobi Medical Center immediately prior to her move to Overlook Medical Center in 2014. Dr Gundavarapu coordinates our geriatric medicine didactic curriculum and has recently expanded our geriatric medicine experience to include a wide variety of both inpatient and outpatient experiences, exposure to interdisciplinary services including geropsychiatry, wound care and engagement with community health. She currently serves as the Chair of our Clinical Competency Committee. Her special interests include resident education, faculty development, quality improvement and transitions of care. She is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and Clinical Assistant Professor at the Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. Her outside interests are playing badminton, cricket, biking, hiking and traveling with family.

Core FacultyDr. Hoang is a graduate of St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Overlook Medical Center. She worked as a primary care physician at Atlantic Medical Group before returning the residency practice at Overlook as a faculty member and preceptor at their ambulatory clinic in Union. She trains residents in providing primary care to their long-term patient panels with a focus on preventative health and management of complex medical conditions. In her free time, she likes reading, attending dance fitness classes, finding good restaurants, and spending time with her family.

Dr. LaCapra attended UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School and completed her internal medicine residency at UMDNJ–Cooper Hospital University Medical Center. She came to Overlook Medical Center in 2004 and serves as the Director of Perioperative Services and the Medical Leader for the inpatient hip fracture service. She enjoys resident teaching and mentorship and is the faculty lead for the Wellness Committee. Dr. LaCapra is a Fellow in the ACP, Faculty Mentor for the NJ ACP Resident Committee, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. She has won several awards during her time at Overlook including Resident Mentor of the Year, Resident Champion and the Physician Excellence Award. Her outside interests include travelling to various beaches throughout the world, dog training, and spending time with family.

Faculty GeriatricianDr. Panagiotou graduated from St. Georges University School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency training including a PGY-3 chief residency year at Overlook Medical Center. She completed her geriatric medicine fellowship at Morristown Medical Center and returned to Overlook Medical Center in 2020. She is a core faculty member and teaches medical residents how to provide thorough care for the complex geriatric patient with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach. She has helped to revamp our geriatric curriculum by introducing experiences in community health and care transitions. Her academic interests include cognitive impairment and memory disorders, evidence-based medicine and medication management in older adults. She is a member of the American Geriatric Society and the American College of Physicians. Her personal interests include traveling, cooking and spending time with her family.

Sofia Terner, MD
Core FacultySofia Terner, MD, is a hospitalist with Atlantic Medical Group (AMG), based at Overlook Medical Center. Board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, she has more than 10 years of experience in managing all aspects of hospitalized patients’ day-to-day care, providing prompt attention to their needs including diagnosis, treatment, and the performance of medical procedures.
Dr. Terner is an avid supporter of medical education. Upon joining the AMG hospitalist group at Overlook Medical Center, she became a core faculty member of the hospital’s residency program where she works closely with internal medicine residents, supervising housestaff teaching teams and providing bedside teaching and direct observation. Her interests include transitions of care, as well as teaching communication skills to medical residents, particularly surrounding goals of care and end-of-life discussions.
After earning her medical degree from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, Dr. Terner completed her complete her internal medicine residency training at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, also in NYC. Prior to joining AMG, Dr. Terner served as an academic hospitalist in New York, where she was involved in resident education and mentorship. She then served as an academic hospitalist in North Jersey, mentoring residents in quality improvement. She has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching.
Dr. Terner is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians. She is a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
