Overlook Family Medicine residents gain inpatient experience in general pediatrics by spending two months of the first year at Hersh Children's Center at Overlook Medical Center. During inpatient rotations, residents work with pediatric attendings and other residents. Additionally, in the first year, residents spend one month in the pediatric emergency department and Morristown Medical Center rotating in the nursery under the supervision of the pediatric residency faculty.
Second-year residents undertake one month of ambulatory pediatric training, including experience in routine well child care and time with various pediatric subspecialists in the outpatient setting.
Family medicine residents have ongoing experience, in all three years, caring for children and adolescents in the family medicine office and family medicine patients in the hospital. Residents also attend several child-specific conferences, including case conferences focused on the first year of life and child psychiatry conferences, among others.
Our practice also routinely screens all youth for mental health issues, and participates in the Pediatric Psychiatry Collaborative, which offers consultations with a child psychiatrist.
