Rotations

Morristown Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) Fellowship consists of the following rotations:

Two Week Rotation

Clinical and Field Exposure 
  • Three MICU ground shifts 
  • One air shift 
  • One specialty care transport unit (SCTU) shift
  • One physician response vehicle shift 
  • One communication center and patient transfer center shadow shift 
Education and Administrative Exposure 
  • Attendance at weekly Friday fellowship didactic sessions
    • Presentation of topic of interest on second week of rotation 
  • Attendance at weekly Wednesday emergency medicine residency conference 
  • Attendance at monthly medical oversight board meeting*
  • Attendance at monthly quality assurance meeting*
  • Attendance at monthly Journal Club*
  • Attendance at monthly ‘Cases and Cocktails’*

Participation in any other EMS associated meetings or events (mass gathering/tactical etc.) that happen to overlap with your rotation.

*If overlaps with your time on rotation.

Four Week Rotation

Clinical and Field Exposure 
  • Five MICU ground shifts 
  • Two air shifts and one specialty care transport unit (SCTU) shift 
  • Three physician response vehicle shifts 
  • One communication center and patient transfer center shadow shift 
  • Three emergency medicine clinical shifts with EMS attending
Education/Administrative Exposure 
  • Attendance at Friday fellowship didactic sessions
    • Presentation of topic of interest on second week of rotation
    • Presentation of QA/QI project on fourth week of rotation 
  • Attendance at weekly Wednesday EM residency conference 
  • Attendance at monthly medical oversight board meeting 
  • Attendance at monthly quality assurance meeting 
  • Attendance at monthly Journal Club 
  • Attendance at monthly ‘Cases and Cocktails’ QA/QI project with abstract write-up 

Participation in any other EMS associated meetings or events that happen to overlap with your rotation.

Full Schedule of Learning Opportunities

Weekly didactics include:
  • Textbook and board preparation lectures based on the textbook: Emergency Medical Services: Clinical Practice and Systems Oversight: 3rd Edition
  • Evidence-based literature review
  • Case-based learning
  • Guest lecturers

The above are well-attended, with 20 or more in-person and virtual attendees including fellows, fellowship faculty, Atlantic Mobile Health clinical staff and management, emergency department attending physicians and resident staff.

Weekly Academic Resident Conference
  • Attendance to help maintain primary board skills and prepare for emergency medicine board exam
  • Board exam review question session with residents following resident conference
  • Fellows to present quarterly at resident conference
Monthly Learning Opportunities
  • Journal Club
  • 'Cases and Cocktails’ – a social outing with Atlantic Mobile Health and emergency department staff
  • Atlantic Mobile Health QA/QI audit committee meeting
    • Fellow is responsible for presenting a portion of QA review
  • Atlantic Mobile Health medical oversight board meeting
Emergency Medicine Conferences

Our fellows can and do attend the following related conferences throughout the year:

  • January: National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) and medical directors course
  • June: First There, First Care and Gathering of Eagles Conference
  • August: ACEP/CORD Teaching Fellowship
  • September or October: Air Medical Transport Conference (AMTC)
  • November: National Conference on EMS
  • Varies: National Conference on Wilderness Medicine
Research Project
  • Conference abstract submission/presentation
  • Manuscript development and journal submission
  • Oversight of residency and medical student EMS rotations
Other Learning Opportunities
  • Quarterly attendance at local and state level EMS meetings
  • Integration into emergency medicine and emergency medical services administrative activities including trauma, STEMI, stroke and disaster committees
