Orthopedic oncology is the field of orthopedic surgery that treats sarcomas and other tumors of the musculoskeletal system. Patients with these conditions are often faced with amputation, but those who are looking to avoid life-long impairment can turn to Atlantic Health System. Our orthopedic oncology program treats both adults and children who have bone and soft tissue sarcomas or other benign tumors. Morristown Medical Center is one of the few medical centers in the region offering limb-sparing surgery.
Limb-Sparing Surgery
We specialize in techniques that give patients the best possible outcomes without amputating arms, legs or other appendages. During limb-sparing surgery, only the tumor and any of the affected bone or tissue in the surrounding area is removed. The void is then reconstructed using metal implants, muscle flaps and transfers, or bone grafts. Learn about more treatments >
Multidisciplinary Orthopedic Oncology Team
Our surgeons work with a large team specializing in both adult and pediatric medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, musculoskeletal radiology and integrative medicine. We also have a dedicated nurse navigator on staff, who helps guide patients through the treatment process and provides referrals to support resources when needed. For maximum convenience, all of our specialists are located on the Morristown Medical Center campus, eliminating the need to travel to multiple offices.
Types of Tumors and Cancers Treated
We treat primary cancers that originate in the bone or soft tissues, also called sarcomas, as well as metastatic cancers that develop elsewhere in the body and then spread to the musculoskeletal system. Our orthopedic oncology specialists are also skilled in addressing benign or non-cancerous bone and soft tissue tumors, multiple myeloma, and pathologic fractures, which may result as a side effect from various cancers, Paget’s disease or osteoporosis.
