The multi-disciplinary team of specialists at The Aortic Center have a variety of treatment options available to successfully treat most thoracic aortic conditions with minimal discomfort or inconvenience to the patient.
- Medications -
- Often diseases of the thoracic aorta don’t require surgery but do require medications to control high blood pressure (hypertension). Our team of expert cardiologists will work with you to make sure that your blood pressure is well-controlled, which can prevent aneurysms from developing or progressing.
- Testing and imaging -
- Our team will determine the most appropriate test to diagnose and monitor your aortic disease. This may include imaging techniques such as transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiogram, a CT scan with or without contrast (CT angiogram), MRI or Cardiac MR, coronary angiography, or ultrasound studies.
- Cardiac surgery -
- Treatment of thoracic aneurysm disease may require conventional open-heart surgery. Our team of expert heart surgeons can discuss surgical options for treatment of your aortic disease. Some of the surgical procedures we offer include aortic valve repair or replacement, valve-sparing aortic root replacement (where the patient’s own valve tissues are preserved while the diseased tissue around the valve is removed), aortic root replacement with either a bioprosthetic (tissue) valve or mechanical (metal) valve, ascending aortic replacement, and partial or total aortic arch replacement. We also sometimes combine a traditional surgical procedure with an endovascular or stent-based therapy (hybrid aortic procedure).
- Endovascular surgery -
- When possible, we offer endovascular or transcatheter procedures which can be done through a small puncture in the groin and use a stent to treat the diseased aorta. These minimally-invasive options generally have a decreased recovery time and shorter hospital stay. These less invasive options can also be offered to patients who are too high-risk for conventional surgery.
- Follow-up care -
- Our comprehensive aortic surveillance program is the cornerstone to preventing life-threatening aortic emergencies. For aortic aneurysms and other conditions that do not require immediate therapy, following their progression and growth is of the utmost importance. We will determine what tests and imaging studies are necessary and at what interval of time these should be performed. Our staff will arrange and coordinate these important studies and work with your other providers to ensure you are getting the best care possible.
