Heart failure affects more than 5 million people in the United States, with 550,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Heart transplantation is currently the only cure, but for some patients our team may recommend a VAD, a mechanical heart pump, that is designed to assist the heart move blood through the body, to help patients achieve their goal of a longer life. There are several types of VADs that are designed to meet specific patient needs. Some VADs are long term VAD and others are short term VADs used only in the hospital when a patient is critically ill.
The VAD program at Heart Success evaluates each patient to determine which type of VAD is the best option. A VAD can be used prior to a heart transplant for those eligible for transplant, if the teams deem this necessary, or as a permanent life prolonging device for those that are ineligible.
Since 2008, The Joint Commission has awarded us with advanced certification in VAD destination therapy, and we were the first center in the nation to implant a Saint Jude Medical Heartmate II® Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) after it received Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval.
Our VAD Medical Team
Treating heart failure requires a patient-centered team approach. Our medical staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, palliative care specialists, pharmacists and nutritionists. Together, they evaluate each patient’s medical history to see if they would benefit from a VAD and work with their loved ones to ensure they receive the most appropriate care.
